If America defaults on the debt, runs out of money, will it become a third world country with mive famine?

One of my old student teachers and I had a discussion the other day. Since hes a history major, I asked him, "can this turn AMerica into a third world country" his response was "Yes, it will. Soon we'll all have to do whatever we can...TO SURVIVE!!!" That scared the crap out of me naturally. Now a default would be bad, but what exactly would it do, and would ANY AMERICANS DIE FROM IT!!?!?!?!?...you know would it cause us to have no money for seeds and food...what???
